   Season 5 - Summary

Never a show to let its fans get used to a particular set of truths, "Alias" once again shattered our perceptions at the end of Season 4 with the revelation that Michael Vaughn was not who we had thought him to be.

Following the car crash, Vaughn is abducted and Sydney learns that he's under investigation, the CIA believing the crash to be an extraction, not an accident. Vaughn escapes and contacts her. She goes to meet him, and he tells her of an organization called Prophet 5, which he's been investigating for years. Together, they set off to obtain more information that will hopefully help them take these people down.

During this time, Syd finds out that she's pregnant, and as they look towards their future, Vaughn is killed. Determined to find the people responsible, she turns all of her energies onto the investigation, teaming up with known assassin, Renee Rienne, who had been Vaughn's partner in his investigation. Rienne assists Syd and APO in their investigation, and it becomes more than clear that Prophet 5 has a specific agenda.

Meanwhile, Sloane is in custody, desperately doing whatever he can to find a cure for Nadia's condition. She's been kept in a coma since the attack on Sevogda, and he's desperate to be released, so that he can continue his search for a cure. On the eve of what we believe will be his sentencing to life in prison, he's approached by a man from Prophet 5 who tells him they can set him free and help him find a cure for Nadia, but they want some things in return.

Sloane is indeed freed, and manages to get himself reinstated within APO in order to be in the best position for Prophet 5.

APO gains a new team member, one Thomas Grace, whom Jack recruits to fill Vaughn's position. His arrival is marked by Weiss' departure... he's been promoted and is on his way to the National Security Council in Washington D.C. As the new guy tries to fit in, the team finds a hacker in the employ of Prophet 5 and takes her into custody, only to learn that she had been deceived much like Syd had been with SD-6 all those years ago. Once learning the truth, the hacker, Rachel Gibson, vows to do whatever she can to bring them down, providing valuable information and becoming the newest team member by default.

As Syd's due date draws near, the plot thickens as they uncover more and more information about this group. During a meet with Renee, Syd is abducted by Prophet 5. Renee manages to capture one of the men responsible, and she contacts Jack. Together they learn that Prophet 5 does indeed have a plan for Sydney, and it involves her unborn child. Meanwhile, Syd is being tortured for information at some unknown location. Using drugs and electro-shock, they force her into a reduced ingression, urging her to find Vaughn and go back to a specific point in time, as they believe she has key information vital to finding something they're looking for... an item referred to as The Horizon. Syd finally gives them the location they want, and it's then that we see that Irina Derevko is the mysterious voice behind the glass overseeing the interrogation. She leaves to pass along the information moments before Syd manages to escape... only to realize that she's being held on board a cargo freighter in the middle of the ocean.

For a while, she manages to avoid the guards and even get off a radio transmission to APO; however, the interrogation methods have caused some problem with her pregnancy and she passes out. Upon waking, she finds that she is hooked up to a fetal monitor, and learns that the woman she believed to be her doctor was actually working for Prophet 5. They perform some procedure on her, and Syd fears for the life of her baby.

Upon Jack's return from his meet with Renee, he directs APO's efforts to recover Syd's transmission, which had been deleted from CIA Headquarters in Langley. The team breaks into Langley's archives and steals the hard drive, which allows them to uncover a key piece of information... a high ranking official within the CIA was the one who'd intercepted the transmission. Jack goes back to D.C., to flush him out, learning that Jeffery Davenport, a prominent director, was in Prophet 5's pocket. Davenport, under extreme duress, gives up the location of the cargo freighter, allowing the team to rescue Syd.

   Episode 11 - Maternal Instinct

After having made a deal with the government, Davenport is enroute to an airfield when his transport is ambushed. His guards are killed, and he stumbles out onto the street, pleading with whomever is out there. He's shot through the knee, bringing him to the ground. Irina walks up and points the gun at him, angry that he'd compromised their agenda and demanding to know what he'd told Jack. Davenport swears that he'd given nothing away and begs her for mercy. She shows none, shooting him twice in the head before walking away.

Back at home, Syd has been kept in the hospital for observation while they run every known test to ensure that the baby is okay. Jack comes in to let her know the baby is fine... that she'd had a crisis on board the ship, but the doctor there actually saved the baby by repairing the damage. Syd is puzzled as to why they'd save her baby at all... why they would care. Jack's escort comes in and tells him his time is up, which is when we find out that he's been in custody following the incident with Davenport and the other directors in Washington. He tells Syd not to worry and that he'll see her soon.

Dixon comes to pick Syd up from the hospital the next day, informing her that Jack has been released and wants to meet with them away from the APO office. They rendezvous, and Jack tells them that Davenport had been killed, and that Devlin believes there is another mole inside APO. Also, as a condition of his release, Jack has been ordered to suspend his investigation into Prophet 5, meaning that they'll have to close ranks and go off-book in their efforts to uncover the truth. Syd tells him what Prophet 5 had been after when they abducted her and Dixon remembers that it's a reference to an old Alliance mission.

Jack instructs Dixon to dig up whatever he can and suggests that Syd contact Renee to be back up for Dixon. He also orders Syd to go home and pack a bag, because he wants to move her to a safehouse. She arrives home to find her mother waiting for her.

Irina tells Syd that she knows all about Prophet 5 and that they'd abducted her. It's why she's come, because she knows they believe Syd to be the key to finding something they'd been searching for.

As the team gets the information on the old mission out of the Alliance archives, Syd calls Jack to tell him that Irina is there. He goes over, and the three of them talk over options. In the meantime, Dixon and Renee have gotten the location of the Horizon, and Dixon calls Jack to tell him that its in a safety deposit in a bank in Vancouver.

Irina offers to retrieve it since he's being watched, but Jack insists that they go together. Irina is displeased by this, but acquiesces, only to have Syd declare she too will be accompanying them.

The Bristows set off for Vancouver, and we learn that Irina has informed Prophet 5 that she knows where the Horizon is and is on her way to retrieve it. Not trusting her fully, they send their own team in behind her to ensure that they end up with the item.

The operation goes smoothly and they retrieve the Horizon from the safety deposit box. Jack scans it and realizes it's rigged with some sort of device that will dispense an acid if someone tries to open it improperly. He says that they'll have to take it back to Marshall, at which point, Irina attacks him and tries to knock him out. He blocks her and they scuffle. Meanwhile, Syd has noticed the other team approaching and rushes in to warn Jack and Irina, finding her mom pinned up against the wall and Jack holding a gun to her head. She realizes that it was her mother on the ship directing her interrogation, and that she'd only come to see her because she'd figured out that Syd had given them the wrong location. As Jack threatens Irina, Syd goes in to labor, and their focus shifts to trying to get her out of the building.

Irina tries to tell them that this other team is not with her, but Jack and Syd don't believe her, demanding to know what her extraction plan had been to get away from them. She tells them that she's got a helicopter waiting for her signal, so they start towards the helipad on the roof of the building. The other team takes out the helicopter, trapping them in the building.

While Jack goes to take out the enemy team, Syd holds Irina at gunpoint, accusing her of giving the order to kill Vaughn, which Irina doesn't deny. They talk further, and Irina tells Syd that she'd never wanted children... that the KGB had demanded it in order to ensure Jack's allegiance to her. She'd known she could never be a mother and an agent, and she'd chosen being an agent over being a mother. She forces Syd to give her the gun when she sees a member of the other team headed their way. She kills him and frees herself, grabbing the Horizon, prepared to leave Syd behind on the floor in labor. However, she can't do it and comes back to help Syd, discovering that the baby is breech.

Jack disables the team and arrives just in time to help Irina deliver Syd's baby girl. She escapes with the Horizon moments later, but phones Marshall back at APO and gives him their location so they can be extracted.

On the plane home, Jack holds his granddaughter and assures Syd that they'll find her mother. She gives him an intent look and he nods, promising to "take care of it".

The scene cuts to a remote area in Bhutan, where a man arrives to pass a message to a monk, who then walks into a room and informs a very-much alive Vaughn that he has a daughter. The episode ends with Vaughn's smile at hearing this news.

Episode 11 - Memorable Irina Quotes

Irina: Tell me exactly what you said to my husband. Did you tell him about The Horizon?
Davenport: No, of course not. You have to believe me! I swear!
Irina: I do believe you. (bang bang)

Irina: I'm here now... everything's gonna be fine.

Irina: I know about Prophet 5. I know they abducted you. That's the reason I've come.

Syd: Dad's looking into it.
Irina: You told your father? That's good. (big smile) How's Jack?
Syd: He's good. (pause) Prophet 5 killed Vaughn.
Irina: I know. I'm so sorry.

Irina: Jack.
Jack: You look... well.

Irina: Look at us…about to become grandparents.
Jack: I'm doing my best to ignore that.

Syd: We'll need to act fast. Prophet 5 has probably figured out by now that I gave them the wrong information.
Irina: Yeah. That's a safe assumption.

Irina: (in disguise on Vancouver mission) Then you know... it's a parent's job to take care of the children.

Syd: That was you... on the ship... wasn't it? Behind the glass. You orchestrated the whole thing because you wanted this (glances at Horizon). And when... when you couldn't torture it out of me, you came to me as my mother.
Irina: I am your mother.

Jack: Call off your team.
Irina: They're not my team.
Jack: I don't believe you.
Syd: Dad...
Irina: You need to believe me, because if Peyton's here, she's here to kill me too.
Jack: She's gonna be very disappointed, because I’m about to beat her to it!
Syd: Hey Dad...
Jack: I thought I killed you once. This time I'll be more thorough.
Syd: Dad!
Jack: (looks at her)
Syd: Baby's coming...

Jack: What's the signal to the helicopter?
Irina: A beacon. It's in my bra. (smirk)

Syd: The truth takes time. That's what you said... years ago. Is this what you meant?
Irina: You like it to be simple. It's never simple.

Irina: You should know something Sydney... I never wanted to have a child. The KGB demanded it. They knew it would ensure your father's allegiance to me. You were simply a means to and end, and then... when the doctor put you in my arms, and I looked at you... so fragile... all I could think was how could I have made such a terrible mistake? And at that moment, I was sure of one thing... I couldn't be an agent and a mother... I'd either fail at one or both. And I chose to fail at being a mother.

Irina: In time you'll learn... you can't do both.
Syd: Watch me!

Irina: Sydney, you have a baby girl.

Irina: (to Marshall ordering Jack and Syd's extraction) Tell the team – they need diapers.

   Season 5 - Summary Episodes 12 - 16

Four weeks later, a restless Syd has grown anxious while on maternity leave. There’s been no movement on the part of Prophet 5, and the CIA has been unable to locate Irina's whereabouts. Jack assures her that they are doing everything they can and encourages her to simply relax and enjoy her time with Isabelle.

Meanwhile, Prophet 5 brings Sloane in for a meeting with The Twelve... his first face-to-face... and they inform him that they are prepared to hand over the cure for Nadia’s condition, if he will perform one final task for them. They need Syd back in the field, with him guiding her movements to their advantage.

Knowing that she will likely require incentive to return from leave early, Prophet 5 secures Anna Espinoza's release from prison, promising her the opportunity to destroy Sydney Bristow. They task her with kidnapping Will Tippin to use him as bait to lure Syd back into the game.

Their plan works, and Syd insists on returning to active duty. Jack sends a pair of specially trained agents to watch over Isabelle in her absence, and as planned, Anna arranges to meet a contact in Moscow, making sure that her transmission is detected by APO.

The team assembles in Moscow to surveil the meet, only to learn that Will is being held in the same location. Syd goes after him and fights with Anna, who cuts her arm. Prophet 5's team runs a scan on Syd mid-fight, using the open wound in order to capture certain data they need. Anna escapes, and Syd and Will return to Los Angeles.

While catching up on the last two years and spending time with Isabelle, the security measures installed in the apartment detect an incendiary device implanted within Will. The team learns that Prophet 5 had placed a bomb inside his head, and unsure about what countermeasures might triggered if they try to remove it surgically, they opt instead to find another way.

According to the plan, Anna contacts Syd and demands that she bring Page 47 of the Rambaldi manuscript to a pre-determined location in exchange for the deactivation codes on the device in Will's head. The team decides Will should go with Syd, so that they can attempt to retrieve the codes themselves during the meet with Anna.

The drop is to occur on a train, and while Syd and Anna meet, Will begins scanning the detonator for the codes; however, the meeting is a trap designed to get Sydney locked inside a particular train car where she is sprayed with an unknown liquid chemical that is collected in a special drain bin below the train. Will goes after Syd and the three struggle with Anna, who tosses the detonator out of the now open train car into the river below. Syd and Will jump off the train and go after the detonator, which has begun counting down. Syd manages to grab it and shut it off.

We learn that the chemical substance was designed to capture Syd's DNA for the purposes of cloning Syd, and that Anna is the intended recipient.

Sloane receives the cure for Nadia and is released from his agreement with Prophet 5. However, once he reads the enclosed instructions, his concern about the procedure leads him to a meeting in Barcelona with his former Prophet 5 contact, where he learns that Rambaldi was the designer of the antidote. Feeling somewhat more secure, he returns to Los Angeles and administers the cure, which first requires him to stop her heart before injecting her with the substance. It works, and Nadia awakens.

APO learns that Anna is using a call center in Jaipur to route all of her calls. Syd and Renee infiltrate the facility and tap into the router, so that they can monitor her communications.

The team intercepts a call Peyton makes on Anna's behalf to secure the services of a man who can help them decrypt a message hidden within the text of Page 47. Tom and Renee go to Zurich to get the intel from this man, who happens to be a contact Renee has utilized in the past.

Marshall is able to track the transmission back to Barcelona before the call is disconnected.

Jack, wanting information on Page 47 and what might be hidden within the text, goes to see Sloane, just as he's administering the cure to Nadia. Sloane tells him that one of the back-channel research projects he'd funded out of Barcelona had paid off and discovered the cure. Jack becomes suspicious and determines to find out what Sloane is up to.

Nadia goes home with Sydney, who tells her of their suspicions, and after deliberately letting Sloane know of the message hidden within the text of Page 47, Jack overhears a call Sloane makes arranging for a meeting with a contact. Nadia joins Jack in surveilling the meet to learn what her father is up to. They follow him to a storage facility, only to discover that he'd gathered some of Nadia's things that he'd placed in storage. Jack apologizes for having misread the situation.

Tom and Renee question Anna's contact and learn that the document known as Page 47 is actually a fake. As this information is relayed to Jack at APO and they question the whereabouts of the real document, it is revealed that along with some of Nadia's personal items, Sloane also removed the authentic Page 47 from his storage facility and has begun working to decode the message.

Sydney and the team join Tom and Renee in Ghana, where the contact is to meet Anna to hand over the message from Page 47. They surround the marketplace, but the meet goes wrong, and Anna, who know appears to be Sydney, kills Renee.

Back in Los Angeles, Nadia decides to visit Sloane and see if they can build some sort of father-daughter relationship. While there, she discovers Page 47 on his desk, and the two argue about it. Nadia tries to throw it in the fireplace, and as Sloane moves to retrieve it, they struggle, and he knocks Nadia backwards into a glass coffee table, where a shard of glass punctures her jugular vein. She dies.

Her death spurs him to return full force to his Rambaldi obsession, and he takes the charred page, whose message he now understands, and joins Prophet 5 in their quest to realize the 15th century seer's final endgame.

The team brings Renee's body back to APO, and while they are at Nadia's funeral, the medical examiner conducts the autopsy on Renee, where he discovers a microchip that had been implanted in her chest.

Marshall is unable to gather any data from the chip, but does uncover an inscription that leads Jack and Sydney to the conclusion that she must go see Vaughn, to see if he knows anything about it at all.

Using taps Sloane had placed on APO's internal phone lines, Prophet 5 is able to intercept the message about Syd's meet, and they send Anna in to take her out and go to the meet in her place. Anna is quite surprised to learn that Vaughn is the person Syd was on her way to see, having believed as everyone had that he was dead.

Vaughn remembers something his father had told him about that had happened when he was a child, leading him to the conclusion that there was a second chip implanted within him. They extract it, and it matches the one found in Renee.

This gives them information that leads them to Hamburg, Germany. Syd manages to arrive just as a chopper takes them away from the safe house towards that location.

Vaughn and Anna discover a bunker housing all of his and Renee's fathers' research into Prophet 5. Sydney shows up just as Anna is about to kill Vaughn, and she kills Anna. They realize they've got the perfect set-up in place for her to infiltrate Prophet 5, so she leaves Vaughn and drives away with Peyton, handing over only the chip that had been found in Renee.

Meanwhile, Sloane has been stalling for time by making Prophet 5 think he hasn't yet decoded the message. He is haunted by Nadia, who taunts him relentlessly about what he's doing. While not technically a prisoner of Prophet 5, he is nevertheless under constant surveillance and unable to leave their base of operations alone, so he creates a scenario by which he can use Peyton to contact someone on the outside.

With the ruse that perhaps his daughter's death had taken a greater toll than he'd expected... one that is hampering his progress with Page 47... he asks to be taken to a church, whereupon he secrets a message away on the altar that is subsequently retrieved by Julian Sark.

Having believed in Syd posing as Anna, Peyton takes her back to the estate being used as the Prophet 5 base and sends her in to meet with Sloane. Syd, posing as Anna, taunts him with the information that she's killed Sydney Bristow.

Vaughn had managed to place a tracker on Sydney, so they could monitor her movements. Once alone inside her room, she also contacts Jack with news that she is to accompany Sloane to Rome in order to retrieve something known as "The Rose", which was apparently what the coded message on Page 47 was about.

Having sent Dixon to Germany to assist in collecting the research on Prophet 5, Jack calls Vaughn and re-tasks he and Dixon to Italy to provide backup for Sydney.

Angered that Anna had "shot Sydney in the back", Sloane asks to be the one to kill her when the mission is over. Peyton agrees. In the meantime, he's arranged for Sark to meet with "Anna" to assist in the retrieval of the artifact.

What Rambaldi had known as a monastery was now a maximum security prison, and Sark had devised a plan by which to "break them into prison". Once inside, he manages to facilitate Syd’s movements into a solitary holding area where the artifact was supposed to be located.

Once there, she finds an old man who had apparently been tasked with waiting for "The Chosen" one to appear and gather "The Rose", which was actually an amulet containing some unknown substance. He tells her that what is contained inside would be the end of all nature, but there was nothing she could do to stop what was to come.

She leaves him and heads back to her prearranged extraction point with Sark, only to find Sloane waiting for her. He's arranged for Sark's release, and while Peyton leads him out, Sloane takes the amulet from Syd and tries to kill her, believing she is Anna. A guard warns him he must go, and he gets away just before Vaughn arrives to rescue Syd.

Back at home, Sydney is consumed by worry over what the old man had told her and works relentlessly to try to find any shred of a lead on Sloane and Prophet 5.

Using the information found inside the bunker in Germany, the team works quickly to gather visual confirmation of each member of The Twelve named in those documents. Once they've confirmed each member's identity, they begin working on various scenarios for taking them down, knowing that any move they make must be definitive and simultaneous.

Sloane and Sark convince Peyton to join them, pointing out that once she delivers the amulet, her use to Prophet 5 will be of little consequence and they will most likely kill her, as well as Sloane. Together, the three of them can see the game through to the end.

Recovery of the amulet had been but one step, as the message had also spoken of a specific underground cavern. Sloane kidnaps Marshall and Rachel to get their help in hacking into the government's ground penetrating satellite network. They refuse and are tortured repeatedly, neither of them breaking.

Nadia's ghost continues to taunt Sloane, and he realizes that he will have to resort to other means to coerce Marshall's cooperation. He pays an unexpected visit to Sydney and makes her tell Marshall that he must do whatever Sloane says. Marshall acquiesces, but passes a message to Carrie, who has now joined APO to help in the search for him, knowing that she'll understand what he's trying to say and can help the team locate them.

Together, he and Rachel hack their way into the satellite system, all the while also sending a signal back to APO that will reveal their location.

They find what Sloane needs, directing him to Mt. Subasio in Italy. The team arrives to save Marshall and Rachel after Sloane, Sark and Peyton have left. Believing that Sloane is on his way to Zurich to meet with The Twelve to give them the information, Sydney and Vaughn go to Italy to see if they can retrieve what Sloane is after before he does.

Only he's in the cave when Sydney reaches it. As he tells her of his plans, Peyton arrives in Zurich and proceeds to assassinate The Twelve, while Sark plants a bomb in the Los Angeles subway system with the intention of destroying APO and killing the team.

They figure out what Sark is up to and are able to evacuate the subway. Tom finds the bomb in a railway car stopped along the track and stays behind to delay the countdown giving more time for the evacuation. Instead of using the last sixty seconds to get out as ordered, he stays and dies in the explosion.

As the sun rises over Mt. Subasio, Sloane uses the amulet to reveal something on the wall of ice in the cavern. He apologizes to Sydney and tells her that she's not allowed to see the information revealed there. He shoots the ice at her feet and sends her plummeting into darkness.

Episode 17 - All the Time in the World

We begin with a flashback of young Sydney in school, having trouble deciding upon the topic of a drawing she's been instructed to do by her teacher. Seeing her difficulty, the teacher comes over and tries to coax her through, asking her what is the first image that comes to mind when asked the question, "What do you want to be when you grow up."

We then cut to the present, where Syd lies unconscious in the cavern on Mt. Subasio following her confrontation with Sloane.

Back in Los Angeles, Jack and Dixon assess the damage in the aftermath of the explosion, and Jack tells him to gather Rachel and Marshall and contact Sydney. They’ll rendezvous in his storage facility to regroup and figure out their next move.

Vaughn finds Syd underground and begins to try to revive her, begging her to stay with him... that she's "stronger than this", whereupon a still unconscious Sydney flashes back to the night her mother was killed in the car accident, with Jack telling her the news and asking her to be strong. She finally comes to and Vaughn helps her get to a safe location in Siena.

Sloane, Sark and Peyton rendezvous, each having completed their own tasks in their endgame. Peyton hands over a case, and Sloane asks if she was able to meet with their friend in Hong Kong. Peyton confirms that the meet went well, and that the contact sends her regards. Sloane opens the case to reveal a sphere contained inside. They then turn and enter a hangar, where we see two intercontinental cruise missiles waiting to be used as some part of their plan.

Jack tasks Dixon with monitoring Prophet 5's assets, believing that Sloane will have taken control of their organization after assassinating The Twelve. Meanwhile, Marshall and Rachel begin setting up their computers and hacking into Langley for access.

Vaughn phones in from the safe house to let them know they are okay. Jack tells him about the explosion at APO and that Tom is dead. He instructs them to wait in Siena for further information.

Sydney flashes back to her childhood again, remembering the first time she solved the puzzle that was used in Project Christmas. Jack finds her and is astounded that she was able to solve the puzzle. He tells her that it's a test called an indicator, and that she is a very special little girl, because she could put it together.

Back in the present, Syd is reading a report on two stolen cruise missiles that were taken from a storage facility in Moscow. She and Vaughn ponder the ramifications of this move, surmising that Sloane is the one who stole. Sydney feels that it's hopeless that they'll be able to find Sloane and stop him, but Vaughn keeps encouraging her, reminding her of the things they'd manage to accomplish so far. Suddenly, Syd realizes that Sloane would have no need to steal the missiles, given that he now had control of Prophet 5's assets. He could just buy them on the black market. Feeling somewhat rejuvenated, she realizes that they can track him through the money.

The team goes into action and manages to hack into the financial records to identify the people receiving the payoffs. They then acquire the phone records of these people and are led to Kelly Peyton. Vaughn and Dixon take her into custody and bring her back to the team's base of operations, where they interrogate her and learn that while she has no idea where the missiles are located, that Sloane plans on using them to destroy two highly populated cities. Jack deduces that Sloane isn't interested in destruction, so much as he is in profiting from the reconstruction of these areas... with Prophet 5's vast resources at his disposal, Sloane would stand to make billions. Sydney goes on to say that Peyton told them that Sloane has gone to Mongolia.

In Mongolia, Sloane and Sark arrive at an excavation site, where a man tells Sloane that "it" has been found.

In another flashback, we see Sydney and Francie during their freshman year of college, with Francie encouraging Syd to go out with she and Charlie that night. Syd is reluctant, as she has yet to determine what her major will be and wants to attend a job fair on campus that night. Francie tells her to just go for education and be a teacher like her mom. Syd tells her that this has always been her safety net, but that she hates to think a decision she makes then would affect the rest of her life. Francie tells her to get over it and pick education. Charlie is bringing a friend named Danny along that night, and they'll pick Syd up at eight. She leaves, and Syd is approached by a man posing as a CIA agent.

As Syd dons her gear to leave for Mongolia, Rachel tells her that she and Marshall are going to hack into NRO and use their optical satellites to try and locate the missiles. Syd realizes that with Prophet 5 destroyed, Rachel's family is safe and that she doesn't have to do any of this anymore. Rachel tells Syd that she's in it until the end.

Back in Mongolia, Sloane and Sark make their way underground, where Sloane leaves them to descend another 200 feet into what we discover is actually Rambaldi's crypt. There he takes the sphere and places it on a pedestal. It lights up and begins to spin, summoning forth a miniature Mueller device, which then begins to drip red liquid into the sphere. Nadia's ghost shows up again and continues to taunt Sloane.

Above ground, Jack, Syd and Vaughn arrive and a gunfight with Sloane's guards ensues. Syd manages to make her way underground and gets the drop on Sloane. Outside, Sark captures Vaughn, but Jack gets the drop on Sark, just before one of Sloane's men gets the drop on Jack. Sark takes both Jack and Vaughn into custody and leads them down into the cavern.

Syd, holding the gun on Sloane, removes the sphere from the pedestal, shattering the Mueller device, which dumps the red liquid all over the floor of the crypt. Sark arrives with Jack and Vaughn just before Syd moves to destroy the sphere.

Back at the team's base, Marshall and Rachel discover a virus that is eating through the network with the goal of disabling the defense satellites. They are able to trace the origin of the virus to Hong Kong, so Dixon goes in to Peyton and demands to know who is there. She tells them that Sloane had been forced to bring in a partner who had something he did not.

Meanwhile, Syd refuses to hand over the sphere, not trusting that Sloane would just let them walk away. Sloane shoots Jack multiple times in the chest, and in the confusion, Sark grabs the sphere and escapes. In retaliation, Syd empties her clip into Sloane who falls back into the pool of red liquid that has collected on the floor.

While she and Vaughn carry an injured Jack above ground, we see another flashback where Sydney visits her father and tells him of her new job at Credit Dauphine. Jack naturally understands the full ramifications of this and tries to coerce her to quit. She informs him that she hadn't come seeking his permission and leaves.

They get Jack on the ground and Sydney goes to work assessing the injuries and trying to stem the flow of blood. Vaughn calls Dixon and asks for an immediate extraction with a med-evac chopper. Dixon tells him of the latest intel they'd gathered from Peyton, and Vaughn tells them that Irina Derevko is Sloane's partner.

Sark arrives in Hong Kong and hands the sphere over to Irina, filling her in on the events in Mongolia. Nonplussed by Sloane's death, she tells him to move ahead with the launch as soon as the satellites are down. Her targets are Washington D.C., and London.

When Jack learns that Irina is behind it all, he forces Syd to go on without him, telling her she is the only one who can stop her mother. He promises that he'll be fine until the med-evac chopper arrives, and reluctantly, Syd and Vaughn leave him behind.

The satellites crash, and Marshall is able to detect the signal when Sark initiates the countdown.

Irina removes the sphere from its case just as Sydney arrives at her location. Sydney correctly surmises that this is the Horizon, and accusingly reminds her mother of all she sacrificed in order to get it. Irina tells Sydney that she never understood Rambaldi's true aim and explains how they are different. As she talks, the scene cuts back to Rambaldi's tomb where Sloane, lying in the pool of red liquid, is resurrected.

Irina and Sydney square off, preparing to battle one another. Irina has come too far to just quit now, and Sydney will not allow her to see her plan through. As they begin to fight, we flashback to Sydney and Sloane at SD-6 where Sloane is giving her an excellent evaluation, upgrading her clearance and promoting her to field agent. Syd is thrilled, but Sloane cautions that she must be sure this is what she wants. The sacrifices she will have to make in this life will haunt her, and she must be sure she can live with that. Naively, Sydney assures him that she can…all her life, she's been searching for her purpose, and this is it. This is who she is.

Irina and Sydney's fight escalates immediately. Sydney stabs Irina in the leg with a shard of broken glass, and Irina attempts to strangle Sydney. Grabbing the Horizon, Sydney strikes Irina's temple with it, and the two end up flying out of a window onto a rooftop area below. Resignedly, Irina questions why Syd keeps fighting her... that even if she bests her in the fight, it's too late to stop the launch. Sydney informs Irina that she'd not come alone, and as their fight resumes, we see Vaughn overtaking Sark and obtaining the deactivation codes, successfully aborting the launch.

In Mongolia, Sloane revels in his victory at achieving eternal life, ignoring Nadia's taunts and sarcasm. Jack shows up and congratulates Sloane, who offers to save him from dying. Jack refuses and tells Sloane that he may have beaten death, but in the end he had not beaten Jack. He holds up a string of explosives and promises that at least Sloane will remain in that crypt with him for eternity. Jack detonates the explosives, and we cut back to Hong Kong.

Irina determines to rid Syd from her life once and for all, telling her that while she really loves her, she can no longer tolerate the complication she's been in her life. In one last sweeping battle, Irina gets knocked back onto a glass skylight. Ignoring the cracking glass beneath her, she struggles to get to the Horizon, consumed by her obsession even in the face of certain death. It's just beyond her reach, but she keeps trying, in spite of Sydney's pleas to reach out for her hand, so that Syd could save her. With one last look back at Sydney and an apology, Irina grasps the Horizon just as the glass shatters, and she falls to her death.

Fast forward a few years into the future, and we see Isabelle building sand castles at the beach, excited to see "Uncle Dixon" walking up. She calls for her mommy and daddy, who come onto the deck. As Dixon approaches with a smile, Sydney introduces him to Jack, the baby she's holding in her arms.

As the old friends catch up, we learn that Dixon is now director, and that Marshall and Carrie have just had their fourth child. We also learn that he's come to get Syd's help on a mission that involves everyone's old friend, Julian Sark. At Vaughn's exasperated look, Syd rolls her eyes and reminds him that he was the one who'd let Sark go in Hong Kong. It's obvious that this isn't the first time Dixon has come seeking her help, and we're led to believe that although she's out of "that life" and living happily on the beach with her little family, that she is still fulfilling her "purpose in life" to stop the bad guys.

The three of them head out for a walk on the beach, Syd calling after Isabelle who has been playing in her room... and we're given a glimpse of what might be her future, as it's revealed that she too can assemble the indicator puzzle like her mother.

Episode 17 - Memorable Irina Quotes

Irina: Sloane's death doesn't change our agenda. As soon as the satellites are down, launch the missile strikes.
Sark: Have you decided on the final targets?
Irina: Washington and London.

Syd: So that's it? That's the Horizon, isn't it? You shot the man I love... you betrayed my trust... you risked my daughter's life... all for that?
Irina: I don't expect you to understand. We're very different Sydney. You still cling to naïve ideals. I learned at a very young age the only currency worth anything in this world is power.
Syd: And the Horizon gives you that?
Irina: You've never seen Rambaldi for what he is. You dismissed his work as the labor of a mad man. You blind yourself to his true potential. I've spent a lifetime acquiring power. With this, (holds up Horizon), I don't ever have to give it up. Rambaldi is life, Sydney. Through him, we can live forever.
I offered you an out. I gave you your daughter. I was hoping you'd settle down...leave me to my affairs.
Syd: You don't know me very well, do you?
Irina: Sadly, I think I do. After all, I'm still your mother.
Syd: That doesn't mean anything... not anymore. I am through being disappointed by you.
Irina: I hate that it's come to this.
Syd: I suppose it had to.
Irina: I've come too far to let anything get in my way.
Syd: Then you'll have to go through me first.

Irina: Even if you manage to beat me on this rooftop... it's still too late to stop the launch.
Syd: (looking at her) You think I came here alone?

Irina: I'm afraid I can't allow you to be such a complication in my life any longer. (kicks Syd) For whatever it's worth, I truly do love you. (hits Syd)

Syd: The glass won't hold you. Mom, you need to come back... Mom! You can make it... give me your hand.
Irina: (looking back) I'm sorry, Sydney.
Syd: Mom! Come back...
