 Summary
Regina is a young American girl who moves with her family to Spain, her father's home country. Moving into an old house in the countryside, all seems fine... for a while.
As time passes, the family begins to change: Mark, the father, becomes aggressive and rude; her brother, Paul, begins to paint dark pictures and fears the darkness. Often, Paul wakes to find unexplained bruises.
Regina's mother, Maria, is seemingly blind to the signs that all is not right with her family.
Only Regina is frightened by the changes she notices, and she begins to investigate the house's history with the help of her boyfriend. Together, they learn that a terrible secret lies within those walls... in the darkness.

Maria is a loving wife and mother, devoted to her family and a dedicated nurse in the hospital run by her father-in-law.
She adores her children, but experiences some difficulties with her teenage daughter following the family's move to Spain.
As her husband and son begin to change in weird and disturbing ways, Maria is either too frightened to see the signs, or doesn't believe that there is really something wrong.
However, it slowly begins to dawn on her that her family is in danger, but she still refuses to believe that the danger is caused by someone other than her husband.
