   Summary

Jack Weil is a professional poker player headed to Havana on the eve of a revolution with one thing on his mind: high stakes poker.

Unconcerned with the rumblings of rebels, his only goal is to put together the biggest game of his life. That is... until he crosses paths with a beautiful woman, doing her a favor that lands him in the very center of political unrest.

After she and her husband are arrested, Jack quickly finds himself even more entangled when he feels compelled to secure her release from prison, trying to convince her to leave the revolution behind and go with him.

In his pursuit of her, his self-centered, single-minded existence takes on deeper meaning, and when he learns that her husband was not assassinated by the secret police as had been reported, he risks everything to reunite them.

Her writer husband soon turns to alcohol to deal with his own failures, and their marriage ends. While in Mexico, Bobby meets Arturo Duran, a wealthy Cuban doctor, and falls in love with him, following him back to Cuba, where she soon becomes emotionally and philosophically invested in his cause to free his country from the corruption he feels is destroying it.

When he is arrested and then executed by the secret police, she reluctantly turns to persistent gambler determined to help her.

While she seemingly falls in love with him and agrees to follow him anywhere, she never quite lets go of her belief in the revolution or the love she has for her husband.

   Memorable Quotes

Jack: You are seriously beautiful.

Bobby: Do you believe in luck?
Jack: No.

Bobby: Perhaps it isn't innocence at all. Perhaps Mr. Weil... really doesn't give a damn.

Bobby: I think you know more than you admit Mr. Weil.

Bobby: I'll drown before I tell you one thing more. You'll die a corporal... you son of a bitch.

Bobby: What are you... a gangster?
Jack: Do I look like a gangster?

Bobby: Why are you doing all this?
Jack: For old time's sake.

Jack: You wanna change the world Bobby? Change mine.
Bobby: How can I? What about my world? If I go with you... what will happen to mine?

Jack: You're good at this.
Bobby: I like doing it.
Jack: Maybe you should go with a prize fighter.
Bobby: No. You.

Bobby: For a moment... for one moment... I was lost... in a sweet place... but lost.

Bobby: Were you waiting for me?
Jack: All my life.

Bobby: You don't quite believe what you know, do you?
Jack: Yeah... I do. I know I love you Bobby.

Jack: You know where to find me.
Bobby: (nods) Walk into any casino and ask any high stakes poker player... where's Jack Weil.
