Biography Swedish director, Lasse Hallström, began his film career working in television and in the music industry, producing videos for Swedish pop sensation, ABBA in the 1970s. He first caught the attention of American movie-goers in 1985 with his film, My Life As A Dog, which garnered him his first two Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay. While he didn't win the Oscar, he did take home a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and a nod as Best Foreign Film by the New York Film Critics. Hallström's career in American film continued to flourish with films such as Once Around, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules (which gained Lasse his second Oscar nomination for Best Director), and Chocolat, which earned five Academy Award nominations. Working with some of the most prominent stars in Hollywood, Hallström has earned his reputation of being a director with whom actors love to work. He knows how to tell a story, and how to let actors do what they do.
